I think this month I will do a month long blog with the things I am thankful for and since I am a day late you will get two days worth.
Nov. 1
I am thankful for wonderful parents and grandparent who have been hard workers and faithful.
Grandma Hansen had 4 children quite fast. I think they were all 12-15 months apart with grandma Cornia as the third child.
Her husband left to find work in Ogden. they ended up getting a divorce and grandma got no support for the children. She worked at what ever job she could get: teachers aid and railroad are two that I know of. On the railroad she did a mans job.
She sacrificed to give her children what they needed. When they were babies she couldn't afford bottles so she fed the children using a pop bottle with a nipple on the top. It had such a small opening she used sand to knock any dry milk from inside of the bottles when she washed them. When 3 of her children got married in the same year she bought each of them a set of real silverware as a wedding gift.
Grandma always planted a large garden and harvested and canned the harvest so they would have food for the winter. It was about 3 times what dad gardens, and it was taken care of by her and the kids.
They lived in a 4 room home. Front room, 2 bedrooms and a kitchen dinning area. They had an out house and a tin tub to bath in(I remember both).
Grandma was born in Mexico in the Mormon Colonies and died in Blackfoot,Idaho(when I was 13 years old). I always wished that she was alive to see my children. I am sure she probably knew them before I did.
Grandma never remarried. I think she was afraid her children might not get treated right by a stepfather. At least that is what I remember them saying.
My Grandpa and grandma Cornia were poor farmers who moved quite a bit. Grandma met grandpa when she was a cook for a rancher and grandpa was one of the cowboys(she was always a good cook).
Grandpa was later injured while working on a dam and became paralyzed. He later went to a chiropractor and slowly recover the use of his legs. During this time grandma and the kids took care of the farm and provided for the family.
They once had a rental but sold it because they were so soft hearted that they would let the renters stay without paying the rent because of hard times.
My parent were both hard workers.
When dad decided to start his own business they had 1 months pay. I was told he spent his last quarter to buy an angel for the top of the Christmas tree that year.
Mother became dads secretary bookkeeper out of necessity and would get the kids off to school, go to work, hurry home and get dinner on the table by the time or shortly after dad got home.
Her house was always clean even thought she worked outside the home (There is another story behind that, that I might tell you some day).
Obviously mother was able to manage money. I don't remember being poor. I am grateful for all they have taught me and the love they have given me.
Nov 2.
I am thankful for my husband and sons: for the great examples they are(no need to elaborate as I have done that plenty already in this blog).
